Eagle Face Off With Venomous Cobra, Tearing It In Half And Swallowing It

A photographer has captured incredible pictures of an eagle catching a snake before tearing the 4ft venomous cobra apart.

After a prolonged search, he said the female eagle (pictured) started hovering at 300m for a few seconds before it locked on to the prey. In this picture, it has captured the snake and stands over it

Gowathaman Ganesan, 48, watched as the raptor ate the serpent at Thenneri Lake in Kanchipuram district, India, in August.

The sharp and powerful beak of the eagle splits the cobra’s scales and begins to tear it apart (pictured) as it enjoys its meal

The entrepreneur said it was cloudy on the outskirts of the district when the female, short-toed Snake Eagle soared past in search of prey.

The snake, having been ripped into two pieces, is dead and the eagle happily starts to swallow it. Mr. Ganesan said: ‘We approached the bird then the eagle started diving towards the prey; by the time we got to there, the eagle caught the head of the 4ft long Indian cobra’

After a prolonged flight it started hovering at 300m for a few seconds before it locked on to the prey, the cameraman said.

Instead of chopping its meal up further, the eagle swallows the serpent whole and makes for a funny picture as it struggles to finish its lengthy victim

Mr. Ganesan added: ‘We approached the bird then the eagle started diving towards the prey; by the time we got there, the eagle caught the head of the 4ft long Indian cobra.’

Mr. Ganesan said: ‘After cleaving the snake’s head, the eagle ripped the meal into a two-piece and started feasting on the bottom part – it was crazy to see

The last part of the snake’s body disappears down the eagle’s throat, with only the very tip of its tail sticking out the bird’s mouth
